Home and Away:  The Impact of World Wars I and II on Southern Coos and Northern Curry Counties in Oregon by Bonnie Jensen Cox and Jerry Cox

Local history authors Bonnie Jensen Cox and Jerry Cox have combined efforts to produce Home and Away:  The Impact of World Wars I and II on Southern Coos and Northern Curry Counties in Oregon.  The study offers a well-documented narration of what life was like for people living on the local homefront during World Wars I and II.  Among the questions addressed are: How were national and state mandates for enlistments, rationing, and war readiness implemented locally?; What was the impact of war on families, education, the local economy, and community cohesiveness?; In the aftermath, what solutions were there for handling post-traumatic stress, war-related injuries, and surplus items?

The boundary for the study is the legal border that encompasses today’s Port Orford-Langlois School District 2CJ, inclusive of the area from Laurel Grove in Coos County to Mussel Creek near Prehistoric Gardens in Curry County. The eastern border of the study extends to the historic town of Eckley.  The authors have compiled a list of men and women who served during the two wars---inclusive of all residents who lived within the boundary of the study at some point in their lives.

Special attention has been given to the young men who lost their lives during the two wars ---their back stories and the circumstances leading to their final denouement described. The 520- page work is published in hardback and includes 200 pages of color images and maps to validate the study.

Because it is the authors’ goal to put the information out to the public and make it affordable, the selling price of the book is well below the actual printing cost.  Interested parties can find the publication at both the Langlois and Port Orford libraries, and soon it will be available at the Curry Historical Society.  For further information, contact bonjercox@gmail, text 541-404-2490, or phone 541-808-0270.

Other books by Bonnie Jensen Cox are:  1.  The Story Behind the Treble Clef:  Family Roots in Denmark Oregon; and 2.  School Evolution:  A Study of Southern Coos and Northern Curry School Origins.

Along with this day old article the Langlois lions Club just got an alert that we may need to provide beds for folk needing shelter from Elk River etc. Man I thought we got away with no big fires this year but it's here again.

Stay safe and bug out if you get told. I worked for Coos Forest Patrol for a number of years and this is tough country and no rain in sight. Gorse fires are a bitch but trying to contain fires in that area is a giant nightmare.  We will update if the Langlois Lions Club is open for displaced folk. At this point they just warned us to get ready if things get bad.  Hope they don't.

Langlois is here to help as we can so we'll see how it goes.  Good luck and hope for some good rain! Read more about Anvil Fire near Port Orford is getting serious

Fun with Langlois and the Machine Leant AI ChatGPT-4

Lets see how much that vaulted super smart AI knows about Langlois Oregon: (using https://openai.com/gpt-4)

What is the history of Langlois Oregon?

ChatGPT I'm sorry, but I couldn't find any specific information about a place called "Langlois" in Oregon in my training data. It's possible that Langlois is a small community or a lesser-known location. Without more context or details, it's challenging to provide an accurate history. If you can provide more information about Langlois or any specific aspects you're interested in, I'll do my best to assist you.

(so that's kind of good to know that the AI bots are not really aware of us at all)

Why is langlois Oregon World Famous?

ChatGPT Langlois, Oregon is not widely known as a "world-famous" destination. It is a small rural community located on the southern coast of Oregon. The town itself has a population of just a few hundred people and is primarily known for its scenic beauty and its proximity to popular tourist attractions.

However, it's possible that there might be a specific aspect or attraction in or around Langlois that has gained some recognition or acclaim. Without more specific information, it's difficult to provide an accurate answer. If you can provide more details about what specifically makes Langlois "world-famous" in your question, I can try to provide a more tailored response.

what is the history of the Langlois Cheese factory in Oregon?

ChatGPT The Langlois Cheese Factory, located in Langlois, Oregon, has a rich history rooted in the local dairy industry. Here's an overview of its history: The Langlois Cheese Factory was established in 1953 by the Langlois family. It started as a small dairy farm and gradually expanded to include a cheese production facility. The family saw the potential to create high-quality cheeses using the abundant milk supply from the local area. Over the years, the Langlois Cheese Factory gained recognition for its artisanal cheeses, made with traditional techniques and using local ingredients. The factory specialized in crafting a variety of cheese types, including cheddar, Colby, Monterey Jack, and curds. The Langlois Cheese Factory became a local landmark, attracting visitors who were eager to taste and purchase their delicious cheeses. It also played a significant role in supporting the local economy by providing employment opportunities and supporting the dairy industry. Unfortunately, in recent years, the Langlois Cheese Factory faced financial difficulties and was forced to close its doors. The closure was a significant loss to the community and to cheese enthusiasts who appreciated the factory's products. While the Langlois Cheese Factory may no longer be operational, its legacy and impact on the local area remain a part of the region's history. Visitors and locals alike still appreciate the role it played in promoting the dairy industry and producing exceptional cheeses.
